Helping radio networks
‘go green’

Modern radio and broadcast technologies such as WCDMA, WiMAX and DVB provide consumers with high bandwidth mobile connectivity ‘on the move’, but at a cost - high network power consumption, due to the poor efficiency of the RF power amplifiers (PA).

Network energy usage is becoming a major concern to operators, both from an operating cost (OPEX) and environmental impact standpoint.

Nujira’s technology can make a significant contribution to improving PA efficiency, reducing network power consumption by up to 50%. By adopting this technology, operators can make a significant improvement to their profitability and their ‘green’ credentials at the same time.

High accuracy tracking technology

Evolving standards - including WCDMA, WiMAX and OFDM demand linear PAs which are inherently inefficient with real-life, variable amplitude signals. Typical PA efficiency with conventional technology can be as low as 10-15%.

Using an advanced envelope tracking technique, Nujira’s technology overcomes this problem by modulating the voltage supplied to the PA in line with the modulation envelope, via a high-efficiency High Accuracy Tracking (HAT™) power modulator.

PA efficiencies of 45% and more are possible using this technology, producing significant energy savings and a consequent reduction in the power expended on cooling and air-conditioning. The reduced heat dissipation also enables the design of smaller, cheaper and more reliable base stations and transmitters.
